DESCRIPTION:Future WLANs operating from millimeter wave bands to one terah
ertz offer both unprecedented capabilities and challenges for mobile commu
nications\, sensing\, and security. In this talk\, I will begin by descri
bing emerging transmitter and receiver architectures that can realize high
-frequency communication and sensing. I will discuss key elements needed t
o realize links that are robust to client and environmental mobility. More
over\, I will show how quasi-optical channel characteristics at terahert
z enable a new perspective on wireless sensing. Lastly\, I will address ph
ysical layer security and resilience to eavesdroppers. Throughout\, I will
draw on experimental results to explore the gap between idealized theoret
ical models and real-world systems.\n\nBio: \nEdward Knightly is the Sheaf
or-Lindsay Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer S
cience at Rice University. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. from the Univers
ity of California at Berkeley and his B.S. from Auburn University. He is a
n ACM Fellow\, an IEEE Fellow\, and a Sloan Fellow. He received the Dynami
c Spectrum Alliance Award for Research on New Opportunities for Dynamic Sp
ectrum Access and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He receive
d best paper awards from ACM DroNet\, ACM MobiCom\, ACM MobiHoc\, IEEE Com
munications and Network Security (CNS)\, IEEE SECON (twice)\, and the IEEE
Workshop on Cognitive Radio Architectures for Broadband. \nHe is serving
as general chair for ACM MobiCom 2021 in New Orleans and previously served
as general chair or technical chair for ACM MobiHoc\, ACM MobiSys\, IEEE
INFOCOM\, and IEEE SECON. He serves as an editor-at-large for IEEE/ACM Tra
nsactions on Networking and serves on the scientific council of IMDEA Netw
orks in Madrid and the scientific advisory board of INESC TEC in Porto. He
served as the Rice ECE department chair from 2014 to 2019.
