DESCRIPTION:*gloknos Annual Lecture Series – Tahu Kukutai (University of
  Waikato) – 2 June 2021 in the UK/Europe or 3 June 2021 in New Zealand |
  22:00 - 23:30 (UK time)*\n\n*Abstract:*\nData is the 21st century’s mos
t valuable resource. Aotearoa New Zealand is a world leader in linking adm
inistrative data\, and an early adopter of data-driven policy-making but h
as yet to develop innovative models of data governance and ethics\, value
creation and benefit-sharing. Many of the assumptions underpinning Aotearo
a NZ’s data ecosystems rest on Anglo-European legal concepts (e.g. indiv
idual privacy\, consent and ownership) which translate poorly into the big
and open data environment. What is needed is a radically different way of
conceptualising rights that relate to massive quantities of data.\n\nIndi
genous data sovereignty (IDSov) marks an important departure from current
theory and practice. At the heart of IDSov is the inherent rights of Indig
enous Peoples and nations to control the collection\, ownership\, and appl
ication of data about their people\, territories\, lifeways and natural re
sources. This talk provides an overview of recent developments in IDSov wi
th a specific focus on the research and activism of domestic IDSov network
s and the Global Indigenous Data Alliance (GIDA).\n\n*Speaker:*\nTahu Kuku
tai (Ngāti Tiipa\, Ngāti Kinohaku\, Te Aupōuri tribes) is Professor of
Demography at the University of Waikato\, Aotearoa New Zealand. Tahu speci
alises in Māori and indigenous demographic research and has written exten
sively on issues of Māori population change\, official statistics\, and e
thnic and racial classification. Tahu is a founding member of the Māori D
ata Sovereignty Network Te Mana Raraunga and the Global Indigenous Data Al
liance. She co-edited Indigenous data sovereignty: Toward an agenda (ANU P
ress\, 2016) and Indigenous data sovereignty and policy (Routledge\, 2020)
. Tahu has undertaken research with and for numerous tribes\, Māori commu
nities\, and Government agencies\, and provided strategic advice across a
range of sectors. She is a member of the New Zealand Chief Science Advisor
Forum and a technical advisor to the data leadership group of the Iwi (Tr
ibal) Chairs Forum. Tahu has degrees in history\, demography and sociology
from The University of Waikato and Stanford University. She was previousl
y a journalist.\n\n*Attendance is free but spaces may be limited\, so plea
