Drugs to Renewable Energy - Dawn Geatches\, STFC UKRI

DESCRIPTION:This talk will take you on my research journey so far\, showin
g you how I got hooked by quantum mechanics - the theory that enables us t
o explore the behaviour of electrons - and applying it to materials mostly
explored at the macroscopic scale. Influenced by my PhD supervisors\, my
computational research began within the layers of clay minerals\, explorin
g the potential for catalysing peptide synthesis - the pre-cursors of life
on Earth. Further applications (e.g. formation of fossil oil\, CO2 captur
e\, small drug molecules\, and solar cell materials) will follow\, finishi
ng with an introduction to my current workplace - Science and Technologies
Facilities Council - and the range of computational science we do.
