sor Roger Goodall (Head of Systems Research Division\, Electronic and Elec
 trical Engineering\, Loughborough University)

DESCRIPTION:Electro-magnetic Maglev systems that use controlled magnets ar
e essentially active suspensions\, and a number of control system commonal
ities with active suspension control for improving ride quality on convent
ional railway vehicles will be presented. However\, although ride quality
improvement is always useful for railways\, there is a stronger rationale
for systems that can enhance the fundamental running dynamics\, in particu
lar control of the wheels and wheelsets. The opportunities and research ch
allenges will be explored in the seminar\, both conceptually and by means
 of research project examples.
