DESCRIPTION:On 6 February 2009 the Whipple Museum - in association with th
 e Cambridge Department of History and Philosophy of Science and the Facult
 y of Classics - will host a half-day conference to discuss the history of 
 research into the Antikythera Mechanism and review the most recent discove
 ries about this ancient Greek artifact.\n\nIn 1974\, Derek de Solla Price\
 , a former member of the Cambridge Department of History and Philosophy of
  Science\, published Gears from the Greeks\, a landmark study of the Antik
 ythera mechanism\, discovered in 1900-01. Price first travelled to Athens 
 to view the fragments in 1958. Fifty years later\, Nature published signif
 icant new research undertaken by the Antikythera Mechanism Research Projec
 t\, building on the work of Price and others.\n\nThe current exhibition at
  the Whipple Museum of the History of Science focuses on this work\; in co
 njunction with the exhibition\, members of the Project will offer an overv
 iew of their research. The afternoon is open to all who are interested.\n\
