DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the language of self-determination\, Indigenous a
rchaeologies are expressions of the sovereignty of Tribal Nations to deter
mine how their heritage will be cared for\, now and into the future. Indig
enous Nations\, however\, encounter several challenges in articulating sov
ereignty-based approaches to archaeology and historic preservation. These
include a lack of funding and\, most significant\, the difficulty of opera
ting within a legal framework for heritage protection that was not designe
d to include the specific needs or interests of Tribal Nations. How then c
an an Indigenous nation make archaeology work for and in accordance with t
ribal needs and values? Using the case study of Field Methods in Indigenou
s Archaeology (FMIA)\, I evaluate how community-based research with the Co
nfederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon contributes to a uniq
uely Grand Ronde way for practicing archaeology. Preliminary outcomes from
the project and its field school suggest that Indigenizing archaeology no
t only fosters more equitable relationships with and to Indigenous communi
ties\, but also transforms the relations of archaeology––from the fiel
d to the classroom––in ways that build our collective capacity to care
for Indigenous heritage. \n\nThis presentation will be on Zoom.\n\nPlease
