DESCRIPTION:Local simulations of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in no
 n-stratified and stratified accretion disks sometimes exhibit recurrent co
 herent structures called channel flows. The formation and destruction of t
 hese\nstructures may play a role in the development and saturation of MRI-
 induced turbulence\, and consequently help us understand the time-dependen
 t accretion behaviour of certain astrophysical objects. In this talk I wil
 l discuss the properties of channel flows and the secondary\nparasitic ins
 tabilities to which they are subject.
