DESCRIPTION:Significant progress has been made recently in using NLP techn
iques to identify facts and the relationships between them. In this talk\,
I will argue that in formulating problems related to the assessment of tr
uth\, it is important to take into account the human process of interpreta
tion. This potentially motivates a shift in thinking about fact extractio
n\, from a problem that is fundamentally about engineering and addressed b
y NLP and machine learning\, to a richer combination of engineering and sc
ientific inquiry that overlaps more significantly with questions in the so
cial and cognitive sciences.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://cl-cam-ac-uk.zo

is Professor at University of Maryland in the Department of Linguistics an
d Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. His recent research has focused
on computational social science\, with an emphasis on connecting the sign
al available in people's language use with underlying mental state (with a
pplications in computational political science\, particularly in connectio
n with ideology and framing\, and in mental health\, focusing on the ways
that linguistic behavior may help to identify and monitor depression\, sui
cidality\, and schizophrenia) and on computational psycholinguistics and n
eurolinguistics\, investigating the role of context in interpretation. Ou
tside his academic research\, Resnik has been a technical co-founder of Co
deRyte (NLP for electronic health records\, acquired by 3M in 2012)\, and
is an advisor to FiscalNote (machine learning and analytics for government
relations)\, SoloSegment (web site search and content optimization)\, and
  Converseon (social strategy and analytics).\n\n\n\n\n
