DESCRIPTION:The availability of large multilingual pre-trained language mo
 dels has opened up exciting pathways for developing NLP technologies for l
 anguages with scarce resources. In this talk I will summarize some of my r
 ecent work (a) on the need to go beyond the most common languages in multi
 lingual evaluation\, (b) on probing multilingual models for factual knowle
 dge in multiple languages\, and (c) on the challenges of handling new\, un
 seen languages through finetuning.
