DESCRIPTION:Lipids are key components of all cellular membranes\, addition
ally they are an essential part of our diet\, however\, they are not simpl
y static entities providing cell structure and energy stores. A range of l
ipids act as intra-and inter-cellular signals controlling cell functions s
uch as migration\, secretion\, cell proliferation and survival and loss of
regulation of the generation or removal of signalling lipids occurs in a
range of diseases such as cancer and some autoimmune disorders. Not all li
pid species within a class of lipids acts as a signal\, for instance the o
ften quoted importance of polyunsaturated versus unsaturated fats in our d
iets has a biochemical basis in determining whether certain lipids are sig
nals or stores. Recent advances in mass spectroscopy has allowed analysis
leading to a greater understanding of the roles of these lipid signals and
points to novel therapeutic targets and the possibility of lipids as biom
 arkers.
