DESCRIPTION:Universities worldwide are dedicated to raising the aspiration
 s of young people and inspiring them to go on and study science at univers
 ity.  As an astrophysicist\, inspiration was never in short supply\, but o
 ne has to take care that if students aspire\, they have the facility and a
 re empowered to follow their new dream rather than be disappointed.  In sh
 ort\, we need to reach out and engage but then we need to follow through w
 ith the academic support to develop the hard skills that they will need to
  reach their goals. I will discuss some examples of bringing outreach and 
 empowerment together in widening participation and research.
