DESCRIPTION:Before the 1917 Revolution Russia had a thriving textile indus
 try\, exporting vast quantities of printed cotton throughout the Russian e
 mpire and beyond. In the city of Ivanovo alone nearly 30\,000 textile work
 ers were employed. Distinctive red prints became an important element of f
 olk dress\, and in the 1920s and ’30s designs promoted the philosophy of
  the new Soviet state. This talk explores the colourful and sometimes dram
 atic history of the industry\, including its links with Britain.\n\n\nWHEN

 speaker\n\n\nPamela Smith is a textile and dress historian. She trained as
  an embroiderer before spending six months in Moscow in 1987\, where she w
 as able to develop her life-long interest in Russian art and culture. Her 
 MA dissertation concentrated on Russian Arts & Crafts embroideries of the 
 late 19th – early 20th centuries\, while her current research concerns B
 ritish workers in the Russian cotton textile industry before 1917.\n\n\nFo
