SUMMARY:Neuroscience without neurons: Bodies without brains and other musi
ngs in science - Prof. Manu Prakash (Stanford University)

DESCRIPTION:We use interdisciplinary approaches including theory and exper
iments to understand how computation is embodied in biological matter. Exa
mples include cognition in single cell protists and morphological computin
g in animals with no neurons or muscles and origins of complex behavior in
multi-cellular systems. I will also share newly invented tools for creati
ng "virtual reality arena" for single cells - enabling never before seen b
ehavior of single cells over multiple spatial and temporal scales. Broadl
y\, these new tools for studying non-model organisms have significant impl
ications for studying microbial life outside the confines of the lab. Tim
e permitting\, I will briefly discuss our philosophy towards inventing a
nd distributing "frugal science" tools (such as Foldscope\, Paperfuge\, Ab
uzz) to democratize access to science including disease diagnostics\, env
ironmental and disease surveillance and enabling citizen sailors to map th
e ocean in the age of Anthropocene.\n
