DESCRIPTION:Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the cause and
development of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as attention-defi
cit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Rec
ent studies have suggested an important role of the gut-brain axis (GBA) a
nd intestinal microbiota in modulating the risk of ADHD. Here\, I will pro
vide a brief overview of the clinical and biological picture of NDDs and h
ow the GBA could be involved in their pathophysiology. I will briefly disc
uss key biological mechanisms involved in the GBA and how these may increa
se the risk of developing NDDs. I will share some of the results my group
(and our collaborators) have obtained showing the putative effects the GBA
could have on (the risk of) NDDs (and related behavior). Understanding th
ese mechanisms may help to characterize novel treatment options via identi
 fication of disease biomarkers.\n\n
