DESCRIPTION:Irene Miguel-Aliaga is Professor of Genetics and Physiology at
Imperial College London\, and MRC Investigator (and\, until recently\, Se
ction Chair) at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences. She received
her PhD in Genetics from the University of Oxford (UK) and investigated h
ow neurons develop during postdoctoral work at Harvard (USA)\, Linköping
University (Sweden) and NIMR (now Crick Institute\, UK). Her research grou
p explores the idiosyncrasies of adult organs: how they differ between the
sexes or across life stages. Their work has revealed intestinal sex diffe
rences that impact food intake\, gamete production and tumour susceptibili
ty. Investigating how the intestine senses and responds to nutrients\, her
lab discovered an intestinal zinc sensor that promotes Tor signalling to
sustain food intake and developmental growth. Irene was the recipient of a
n ERC Starting Grant and currently holds an ERC Advanced Grant. She was el
ected to the EMBO YIP programme in 2012\, to EMBO in 2017 and to the Acade
my of Medical Sciences in 2019. She was also awarded a Suffrage Science Wo
men in Science award in 2018.\n\nJoin live here - https://us06web.zoom.us/
