DESCRIPTION:Metabolism and cell signaling are tightly interconnected\, wit
h each one regulating the other. The mechanisms how cell signaling regulat
es metabolic pathways have been extensively studied\, for instance via tra
nscriptional regulation of gene expression or via post-translational regul
ation of metabolic enzymes. I will discuss the other direction - how metab
olites regulate signaling pathways. One mechanism is via formation of post
-translational modifications of protein via metabolites. One example of su
ch a reversible modification is S-acylation\, the attachment of lipids to
protein cysteines via thioester bonds. I will discuss recent evidence that
different lipids compete for acylation of single sites on proteins\, ther
 eby regulating their function.
