DESCRIPTION: We perform a theoretical analysis of the magnetic and electro
nic\nproperties of the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor\nbeta
-YbAlB4. Using a combination of the realistic material modelling\nand sing
le-ion crystal field analysis\, we propose a layered Kondo\nlattice model
for this system\, in which two dimensional boron layers are\nKondo-coupled
via interlayer Yb moments in a J~z~ = 5/2 state.\nThis model fits the mea
sured single ion magnetic susceptibility\nand predicts a substantial chang
e in the electronic anisotropy\nas the system is pressure-tuned through th
e quantum critical point.\nAn interesting connection is made between this
model and the Kondo\neffect in Coulomb-blockaded quantum dots.\nWe also ca
lculate the Fermi surface and the angular dependence of\nthe extremal orbi
ts relevant to the de Haas-van Alphen measurements.
