DESCRIPTION:Over the last three decades\, historians have shown that durin
g the period of the early republic in the US the state was far more powerf
ul and proactive than previously thought. Conversely\, in the case of Fran
ce\, new work has undermined the earlier narrative of triumphant state-bui
lding under Napoleon. Drawing on these converging historiographies\, Nicol
as Barreyre and Claire Lemercier will sketch out a history of the modern s
tate that shuns national exceptionalism.\n\nDuring the early republic in t
he US the state was more powerful than previously thought. Triumphant stat
e-building in Napoleonic France was often a rhetorical exercise. The talk
will sketch out a history of the modern state that shuns national exceptio
 nalism.
