DESCRIPTION:Ferrofluids were an outcome of nano technology long before thi
s term \neven existed. These colloidal dispersions of magnetic nanoparticl
es \nrespond to magnetic fields in many ways. Particularly interesting is
a \nplain layer of ferrofluid subjected to a constant\, vertical magnetic
\nfield. When a critical value of the applied magnetic field is\nsurpassed
\, a hexagonal array of liquid spikes emerges. Moreover square\nand stripe
-like patterns as well as solitary spikes can be observed. We \nare measur
ing the surface relief by means of an X-ray\ntechnique and compare the res
ults with the predictions of linear and\nnonlinear theory and simulations
utilizing the finite element methode.\n-- Other spectacular effects come i
nto play when the ferrofluid is\nexposed to time-varying magnetic fields.\
nWe present recent results on the flow of ferrofluid exposed to\nalternati
ng\, rotating and traveling magnetic fields ("magnetic pump").\n
