DESCRIPTION:In the last decades\, the study of disasters in the past from 
 an historical perspective has shown how these events deeply modified the p
 olitical\, economic and social life of pre-industrial societies. In this s
 eminar we will focus on analysing the way in which past societies have dea
 lt with disasters. From the coexistence of multiple interpretations of the
 ir causes\, to the importance of information networks in the aftermath of 
 the disaster\, or the leading role of experts in the resolution of the eme
 rgency.
