DESCRIPTION:Natural variation\, sub-structural features\, heterogeneity an
 d porosity make fracture modelling of wood and other naturally occurring h
 eterogeneous and cellular materials challenging. This is particularly true
  in the case of dynamic fracture. In this talk\, I will present a phase fi
 eld model for simulating fracture in such complex materials at high loadin
 g rates. The phase field model is based on variational principles and requ
 ires few additional parameters. The model is validated against experiments
  performed on different materials and geometries. The talk also includes s
 imulations of fracture in high resolution wood and other complex microstru
 ctures.
