DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will explain the role of certain special functi
 ons\, such as the error and complementary error function\, in problems of 
 asymptotic and\nuniform asymptotic expansions derived from integrals of La
 place type. A possible generalisation of the error function will be presen
 ted\, motivated by a\nsingular perturbation problem\, and several analytic
 al and computational properties of this new function will be discussed.\n\
