SUMMARY:Hardware security: trends and pitfalls of the past decade - Sergei
Skorobogatov - Computer Laboratory\, University of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:It has been a long time since the hardware security problems i
n semiconductor\nchips were brought to light by Ross Anderson and Markus K
uhn in the late\nnineties\, followed shortly by Markus Kuhn and Oliver Kom
merling paper on the\nforefront attack technologies used for breaking smar
tcards. Now it seems quite\nlogical to look at the progress made in this a
rea as a whole decade has passed\nsince that time. The defence technology
has been significantly improved\, but\nthe attackers did not sit idle and
made some progress as well. The question is\nwhether the lessons were lear
ned and whether we have significantly better\nhardware security protection
in semiconductor devices around us today.\n\nThe purpose of this talk is
not only in summarising achievements at both the\nattack and defence ends.
I will raise some concerns about certain security\nfailures\, point out c
ommon mistakes made by chip manufacturers and discuss\npossible roots of s
uch problems. Finally\, I will try to project the trend of\nhardware secur
ity area into the nearest future.
