DESCRIPTION:The Kelvin Club’s third and final event of the term will tak
e place exclusively on Zoom with Professor Joe Pesce\, an astrophysicist a
nd alumnus of Peterhouse. Professor Pesce is currently responsible for mos
 t of the US Government's ground-based radio astronomy facilities\, which h
ave enabled groundbreaking insights into black holes.\n\nPlease register h
ere for the joining details: https://forms.gle/crsh6HuZ3vGTHyiYA\n\nABSTRA
CT:\nBlack holes are among the most enigmatic objects in the universe\, an
d come in a variety of sizes\, from several times the mass of the Sun to m
onsters with many billions of times the mass of the Sun (and maybe even at
omic-sized ones). New advances in astrophysical instruments - with traditi
onal electromagnetic observations as well as new ones using particles and
gravitational waves - make this a golden age of black hole research. Recen
t findings from gravitational waves and the early universe are challenging
traditional views.\n\nPlease join us at 8:30 pm on Zoom! A Q&A session wi
ll follow the talk.\n\nAll are welcome\, no matter the discipline\, for wh
at promises to be a fascinating evening of science.
