 n academia. In industrial R&D we can sometimes benefit from a flexible\, b
 road approach in order to respond to the changing needs of the labour mark
 et\, commercial pressures\, and occasional setbacks. Allowing oneself to m
 ove away from expertise to a more generalist approach can result in intere
 sting career progression and be a route to making a role of one’s own de
 vising.
