DESCRIPTION:Field based studies have shown that the carbon stored in tropi
cal forests is increasing\, presumably due to CO2 fertilisation. However\,
the field plots on which these long-term studies are based are small and
are mostly located in more accessible areas. Combining machine learning wi
th remote sensing data provides many opportunities to improve and extend t
hese field measurements. We will discuss a few examples\, ranging from hig
hly detailed terrestrial laser scanning to satellites. We will focus on th
e problem of segmenting individual trees in remote sensing data. This is a
dresses a key bottleneck between field data (which measures trees) and rem
ote sensing data (which works in pixels).
