DESCRIPTION:Mitochondria play an essential role in apoptotic cell death. T
he textbook view of apoptosis is as a silent form of cell death\; this mak
es intuitive sense given the billions of cells that die each day through a
poptosis. Nonetheless\, recent work from us and others has shown that alon
gside triggering cell death\, mitochondria elicit inflammation. Some of th
ese inflammatory pathways likely stem from the bacterial ancestry of mitoc
hondria. I will discuss how mitochondria can engage cell-death associated
inflammation and how we can therapeutically harness these processes to imp
rove cancer treatment. Finally\, I will discuss our recent efforts to unde
rstand “day jobs” of cell-death associated inflammation\, specifically
in the context of senescence and aging.
