DESCRIPTION:Recently there has been intense study of the homology of confi
 guration spaces of manifolds and many extra structures have been imposed o
 n it to extract more information. We focus on the action of the mapping cl
 ass group and will present a result for general manifolds. In the case of 
 compact oriented surfaces with one boundary component\, we will present th
 e complete answer for the cohomology of its configuration spaces as mappin
 g class group representations\, motivate the answer pictorially and give a
 n overview of the steps involved in the proof.
