DESCRIPTION:Collecting data from the field is a key part of glaciological
research\, and is often hampered by the complex logistics of making measur
ements in remote locations. It’s still extremely common for research dat
a to be collected on data loggers and retrieved physically during a “ser
vicing visit”. By contrast\, remote sensing data often arrives within da
ys of being collected and can be analysed immediately. In this seminar\, D
r Mike Prior-Jones from Cardiff University (a former BAS communications en
gineer) will present his future plans for a system of wireless instrument
s that can be used by glaciologists to collect data in real time from loca
tions in snowpack\, in supraglacial streams\, in englacial boreholes and s
ubglacial water channels. These will use a wireless link technology capabl
e of sending data over kilometres of range both on the surface and within
the ice. This vision is funded though a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship whi
ch Mike will start work on in January\, and builds on his existing work on
the Cryoegg project with Dr Liz Bagshaw and others. The intention is to m
ake this whole system of wireless instruments\, the satellite link interfa
ce\, and the data-handling infrastructure all open source\, so that the wh
ole community can benefit from the instruments themselves and the technolo
gy that they contain. Mike is keen to encourage collaborations with scient
ists and engineers who may choose to take elements of his design and spin
them off to suit their own work\, creating an ecosystem of related\, compa
tible instrumentation that’s proven to work in the polar environment.\n\
