DESCRIPTION:"Material Health / Human Health /Planet Health”\nDr Alison M
ears AIA\, LEED AP Director and Co-Founder\, Healthy Materials Lab\n\nAbou
t the Talk:\nWe will investigate the problematic relationship between huma
n health and the built environment. Traditional definitions of sustainabil
ity situate material health within the context of the planet\, its environ
ment\, and economics. My research\, creative practice\, and teaching explo
res an expanded definition of sustainability\, which places human health a
t the centre of the system. I will present innovative strategies\, tools a
nd practices that enable architects and designers to transform their mater
ials practices\, to help design and build healthier places for all people
that are also beneficial for the planet.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nAlison Mea
rs is an architect\, Associate Professor of Architecture\, and Director a
nd Co-Founder of Healthy Materials Lab (2015). She is co-Principal Investi
gator of the Healthy Affordable Materials Project (HAMP). HAMP is funded b
y The JPB Foundation. The Project is a coalition of four organizations who
work together to detoxify the interior environments of Affordable Housing
.\n\nIn the past six years\, her academic research and creative practice h
ave focused on investigating the problematic relationship between human he
alth and the built environment. As the Director of the Healthy Materials L
ab at Parsons School of Design\, Mears leverages her knowledge and experie
nce as a long-term academic leader within the institution and her practice
-based experience as an architect to confront one of the more serious and
often overlooked environmental challenges of our time: the health of the b
uilt environment. \n\nPreviously\, Alison served as the Parsons Dean of th
e School of Design Strategies and Director of the BFA Architectural Design
and Interior Design programs. Her work draws from the long tradition at T
he New School University’s commitment to promoting community-based susta
inability\, social engagement and environmental justice. She continues to
practice architecture as a partner in her own architectural practice\, wi
th an increasing focus on community-based\, pro bono work.
