DESCRIPTION:We would all like to know the weather a few days in advance. I
t would be useful for at least social\, financial and safety reasons. The
first weather forecast (a term put forward by Admiral FitzRoy\, the captai
n of Darwin's Beagle) was printed in The Times on August 1\, 1861. The gov
erning equations are now routinely solved using petaflops -- a thousand mi
llion million calculations per second ! The talk will present the history
and mathematics of weather forecasting and describe some of the people inv
 olved in its development.
