DESCRIPTION:The moduli space of curves has been around at least since Riem
ann. It is a space that parametrises 1-dimensional complex manifolds\, and
mathematicians have studied it using topology\, algebra\, geometry\, comb
inatorics\, and we have even learned things about it from physicists. Stil
l\, in comparison to what we would like to know about it\, we still know b
asically nothing. I will try to give you a sense for why these spaces are
worth obsessing over\, and a taster for how different areas of mathematics
  have contributed to its study.
