DESCRIPTION:The developmental visuospatial disorder\, well-known as Nonver
bal learning disability (NLD)\, is a neurodevelopmental condition defined
by deficits in visuospatial processing with possibly associated problems o
 n attention\, motor\, academic\, and social skills\, but without any neuro
logic or genetic syndromes. Johnson and Myklebust (1967) were the first to
use the term nonverbal learning disability for describing children with t
he above-mentioned difficulties. Although this disorder is still not recog
nized by the international classification systems\, the interest in this t
opic has increased during the past 20 years\, with an effort to define sha
red criteria for its diagnosis. Specifically\, a growing number of cross-d
isorder comparison studies are collecting evidence that clearly shows neur
opsychological distinctions between children with NLD and those with other
neurodevelopmental disorders. The main results of those studies will be p
resented together with a discussion on why shared criteria for the NLD wou
ld improve research in this field and will open up new important scientifi
 c and clinical implications
