DESCRIPTION:An important class of active material consists of fluids of se
 lf-propelled particles\, which might represent\, for example\, swimming ba
cteria. The statistical mechanics of these fluids is very rich\, includin
g some behaviour that mirrors equilibrium molecular fluids\, as well as ne
w non-equilibrium phenomena. We will discuss two situations where the non
-equilibrium character is important: glassy behaviour at high density [1]\
, and rare fluctuations that exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking [2].\n\
