DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nWe give an overview of recent developments in the stab
ility study of nontrivial equilibria in relativistic (Einstein-Vlasov) and
nonrelativistic (Vlasov-Poisson) galactic dynamics. In the relativistic s
etting we focus on the rigorous proof of the Zeldovich stability scenario
and prove that galaxies with very dense cores lead to instabilities driven
by a growing mode. In the Newtonian setting we discuss the existence of o
scillating modes and the implications for the (in)validity of linear Landa
u damping in this context. Our results highlight the importance of the Ham
iltonian structure of these systems. The talk is based on joint works with
  Z. Lin\, G. Rein\, and C. Straub.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n
