 d friendly discussion.\n\nA brief abstract: \nThe late ninth century saw a
  flowering of learning at the court of the West Saxon king\, Alfred the Gr
 eat (871-99)\, including a corpus of vernacular translations attributed to
  Alfred's own authorship. This paper explores King Alfred's learned kingsh
