SUMMARY:Intermittency and Dissipation in Parabolic Stochastic Partial Diff
erential Equations - Davar Khoshnevisan (University of Utah)

DESCRIPTION:Intermittency&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;dissipation&rdquo\; are word
s that attempt to loosely describe two important properties that arise in
interacting particle systems. &ldquo\;Intermittency&rdquo\; indicates the
existence of infinitely many different length scales\, and &ldquo\;dissipa
tion&rdquo\; refers to energy loss. In this talk we describe concrete math
ematical descriptions of these physical terms\, together with some of thei
r connections\, all in the context of parabolic stochastic PDEs. We also h
int at some of the connections to stochastic PDEs driven by fractional pow
ers of the Laplace operator. This talk is based on collaborations with Mic
 hael Cranston\, Le Chen\, Daniel Conus\, Mohammud Foondun\, Mathew Joseph\
 , Kunwoo Kim\, Carl Mueller\, Shang-Yuan Shiu\, Marta Sanz-Sol&eacute\;\,
 and Yimin Xiao.
