DESCRIPTION:I will  begin by explaining the results by Kreck expressing th
 e mapping class groups of some high dimensional manifolds as group extensi
 ons of certain known groups\, and then I will sketch the proof of this the
 orem.  I will use this as a way of introducing certain results and techniq
 ues from high dimensional topology. \nFinally\,  I will explain some more 
 recent results by Krannich regarding the splitting (or non splitting) of s
 ome of the Kreck extensions in certain dimensions. \n
