DESCRIPTION:The central nervous system (CNS) hosts a variety of tissue mac
rophages\, including parenchymal microglia\, as well as border-associated
macrophages such as meningeal and perivascular macrophages. Recent studies
using transgenic animals\, transcriptomic and proteomic technologies have
enhanced our understanding of the ontogeny and diversity of CNS macrophag
es. In this presentation\, I will show that microglia and meningeal macrop
hages share a common prenatal progenitor\, whereas perivascular macrophage
s originate only after birth in an integrin-dependent manner. The establis
hment of perivascular macrophages requires the presence of arterial vascul
 ar smooth muscle cells.
