rsday 27 January 2022\n\n11.30\n\nIn 1818 the Giétro Glacier in the Canto
n of Valais (Switzerland) ruptured leading to an outburst flood that devas
tated the local valley and the city of Martigny. \n\nFrom the available hi
storical background and with the aid of numerical simulations\, it was pos
sible to reconstruct the flood using three plausible scenarios. \n\nThe re
sults were compared with testimonies and show that under simple hypotheses
\, these floods can be modeled with modern numerical methods at low comput
ational cost. In the present context of climate change these historical di
sasters should warn us about the severity and the associated risks these f
 loods have.*\n\nTopic: BPI Seminar 27th Jan 2022\nTime: Jan 27\, 2022 11:1
