DESCRIPTION:Live-bearing (viviparity) has evolved from egg-laying (ovipari
ty) many times in vertebrates. The life history consequences of being one
or the other parity mode are well recognised but the genetic basis was pre
viously uncharacterised and therefore its evolutionary generality not know
 n. In my talk I will share some recent results on the genetics and phenoty
pes of the youngest known example of parity mode switch in an amniote - Eu
rope’s common lizard. This includes new evidence for the functional gene
s of key reproductive traits for oviparity or viviparity\, signals of evol
ution and selection at shallow time scales\, and sharing across vertebrate
s at deep evolutionary time scales. I will also explore the evidence for a
possible reversal back to oviparity in the same species\, ie breaking Dol
 lo’s Law.
