4rHNIBl-b7Avu-0Q7wfbgIfVHv\n\nThis presentation will review a series of fi
ndings and work in progress stemming from the Project on Human Development
in Chicago Neighbourhoods (PHDCN) and Great American City: Chicago and th
e Enduring Neighbourhood Effect. I will focus primarily on the idea that a
neighbourhood’s well-being depends not only on its own conditions\, as
typically conceived\, but also the conditions of the neighbourhoods to whi
ch its residents are connected\, through networks of everyday urban mobili
ty. Results and implications of mobility-based “triple disadvantage” f
or violence\, health\, and racial inequality will be discussed\, including
in a comparative urban framework. Time permitting\, I will also briefly d
escribe research linking individual\, neighbourhood\, and macrosocial chan
ge based on the multi-cohort longitudinal design of the PHDCN. Research on
cohort variations in individual trajectories of exposure to neighbourhood
disadvantage and criminalization will be discussed.
