DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will outline a proof that Khovanov homology det
 ects the figure eight and the cinquefoils.  The proof relies on many deep 
 results in gauge theory as well as Khovanov homology and homotopy\, but un
 like the published proofs of these results\, it does not make any use of H
 eegaard Floer homology.  This is based mostly on joint work with John Bald
 win and Ying Hu
