DESCRIPTION:In binaries composed of either white dwarfs or early-type star
s\, the dominant tidal process involves the dissipation of internal gravit
y waves via nonlinear wave breaking. The details of this wave breaking pro
cess affect the spin evolution of the star and may also give rise to detec
table transients. I will describe the result of resolved\, 2D hydrodynamic
al simulations of gravity wave breaking in a uniformly stratified\, isothe
rmal atmosphere. I then use these results to derive a closed form expressi
on for the orbital decay rate of highly eccentric\, compact main sequence
(MS)-compact object binaries. As a case study\, I apply these expressions
to the MS-pulsar binary J0045-7319\, which has a measured orbital decay ra
te\, and obtain constraints on the structure of the MS star.
