DESCRIPTION:The metal abundances of high redshift quasar broad-line region
s are commonly inferred to be significantly higher than the ISM gas-phase
metallicities of their host galaxies. We present new photoionization model
s which demonstrate that the range of high-ionization UV broad line ratios
observed in luminous quasar spectra can in fact be explained by changes i
n the density and location of the emitting gas\, without the need for supe
r-solar metallicities. Within our new paradigm\, quasars with stronger out
flow signatures show stronger emission from gas which is denser and locate
d closer-in to the ionizing source.
