 can devastate communities in a matter of seconds by destroying homes\, cau
 sing food and water shortages\, disrupting livelihoods\, and killing or in
 juring numerous individuals. Proper mitigation and preparedness efforts ca
 n minimize the impact of disasters by saving lives\, promoting resilience\
 , and reducing the negative economic effects of geological events.\nThis t
 alk will address how the US Geological Survey and the US Agency for Intern
 ational Disaster Assistance’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance support
  geological hazard preparedness and response activities. Activities includ
 e disaster risk reduction programming- such as the Volcano Disaster Assist
 ance Program- that emphasize a comprehensive approach to reducing the impa
 ct of geological disasters."
