DESCRIPTION:Given two knotted circles in R^3\, we can attempt to tell them
apart by defining interesting invariants — numbers\, polynomials\, grou
ps\, etc — and seeing whether they take different values on the two knot
 s. I’ll introduce some examples of each of these and explain how techni
ques from topology can show that one such invariant\, Khovanov homology\,
always manages to tell certain simple knots apart from all others.
