DESCRIPTION:The coil&ndash\;stretch transition is the complete unravelling
of a polymer that occurs when the polymer is immersed in a non-uniform fl
ow field and the magnitude of the velocity gradient surpasses a critical v
alue. It was first predicted and observed experimentally in a laminar exte
nsional flow. Later it was discovered also in randomflows\, even thoughwit
h partially different features. After reviewing the main results on the co
il&ndash\;stretch transition\, I will present some recent results on polym
er stretching in random and turbulent flows.
