 tions on the Geodynamo*\nby Prof Peter Davidson\, University of Cambridge\
 , Engineering Department\n\n_Abstract_\n\nNumerical simulations of the geo
 dynamo are\, perhaps\, finally beginning to approach a dynamically relevan
 t regime. It seems timely\, therefore\, to compare the results of those si
 mulations with the various conceptual cartoons of the geodynamo that have 
 been developed over the decades.\nOne such cartoon is presented here\, bas
 ed in part on helical wave dispersion within the Earth’s core. This cart
 oon is far from the standard model\, but nevertheless seems consistent wit
 h the evidence of the numerical simulations.\nOf course\, understanding th
 e numerical simulations is not at all the same as understanding the geodyn
