DESCRIPTION:In 2014\, the nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 was the subje
ct of the most intensive space and ground-based multiwavelength monitoring
campaign ever undertaken. AGN STORM: the Active Galactic Nuclei Space Tel
escope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign\, revealed a number of s
urprises\, forcing us to reconsider much of what we thought we knew about
the central regions of AGN. Chief among these was the unexpected appearanc
e of anomalous emission-line behaviour starting midway through the campaig
 n. Here\, I review the work that led to the discovery of the anomaly\, its
likely origin\, and implications for future models of the central regions
  of AGN.
